This project will create a new railroad interlocking location along Norfolk Southern’s Pittsburgh Line. This interlocking will provide operational flexibility to Amtrak trains by allowing for the use of both available platforms at Johnstown Station. Currently, a slower branch line must be traversed west of Johnstown in order to use the Track #3 Platform at the station.
Construction began for this project in early 2025. The construction work will be completed in part by the contractor Earthmovers, and in part by NS Forces. Construction is anticipated to be complete by October of 2025. Work has been primarily completed during daylight hours.
The new interlocking, “CP SG”, was placed into service on August 20th, 2025. This new interlocking allows for Amtrak Pennsylvanian passenger trains to utilize both tracks on the island platform at Johnstown Station.
Minor earthwork and tree clearing on the Norfolk Southern right-of-way in the area of the new interlocking will be completed during the First Quarter of 2026. These are the final activities required to fully complete this project.
