The busy west end of Norfolk Southern’s Enola Yard. This project will improve mainline movement fluidity at the west end of the yard.
Pennsylvanian train 43 is heading west through CP Mary after departing Harrisburg, passing an intermodal train. This project will realign these tracks for improved train traffic flow.
Description
The purpose of this project is to add a third mainline track from Enola to Cove PA, preserving the continuous movement of new Amtrak passenger trains through the busy Harrisburg/Enola area. In addition to a third mainline track, this project will also realign multiple mainline and yard tracks, construct one new railroad interlocking, reconfigure existing interlockings, upgrade culverts and drainage pipes under the railroad, modify structures as needed, and improve existing railroad grade crossings.
Construction for this project began in January of 2026, and construction is anticipated to be completed in October of 2027. Work activities will primarily be completed during daylight hours. The daily Pennsylvanian train service will remain in operation during work activities.
The work will be completed both by Norfolk Southern forces and Third-Party Contractors.
Site preparation work, including access road construction, has been completed in the First Quarter of 2026. Utility relocations and new drainage installation along the right-of-way have begun, and this work will continue into the Second Quarter of 2026. Structural work in the area of “CP Mary” is anticipated to begin in the Second Quarter of 2026. The required signal prep work and modifications by Norfolk Southern forces have also begun in the First Quarter of 2026.
